CASA-MODAL®

CASA-MODAL is an initiative that aims to "Clean And Screen All Mouths Of Disability facilities and Long-term care facilities". In Spanish, it means "home mode" (casa = house/home, and  modal = mode). This initiative consists of three arms:

ENGAGE -we engage residents and clients in their familiar surroundings to do screening and help them achieve good oral hygiene. This can mean brushing, flossing, cleaning dentures etc. Looking inside the mouth and making records also helps our healthcare system understand the collective needs of these residents in Singapore. Due to the difficulty for dentists to conduct such checks outside the dental clinic, many of these residents have not had dental checks for decades.

EDUCATE - We empower the immediate healthcare workers and caregivers to provide the best oral hygiene practises through workshops and courses. We develop professional courses to educate dental professionals how to better care for elderly or those with disabilities.

EXPAND -

  • Develop resources, including screening forms, consent forms, logistics inventory, videos

  • Engage volunteers to create a conducive environment where they will thrive, learn, stay and ultimately enjoy the process of caring.

  • Garner help via funding and various ways from passionate health institutions, clinics and charities who are also keen in improving oral healthcare of the needy in Singapore.

  • Support research of this field by tying up researchers / clinicians to members of the facilities. This includes surveys, cross sectional studies, and case reports.

Prevention of oral health diseases start from daily hygiene practises. Other than going in to help with brushing, our goal is to empower healthcare workers to become better brushers not just for their dependents, but also themselves:)

OH SCREENING CHART

This Oral Health Screening Form is not just used to chart, but also as a data collection tool for oral epidemiology, and doubles up as a referral letter. It enters a significant depth of OH assessment, and requires an understanding of BDA Case mix complexity, Basic Periodontal Exam (BPE), Salivary pH, understanding of accessibility problems due to disabilities etc. All the best!

CASA-MODAL II: Video

WHAT ARE WE DOING ON YOUR FIRST DENTAL CHECK UP?

This video is designed to prepare individuals with learning disability or with Autism spectrum to gain familiarity, provide modelling, prior to their oral health screening. It also offers visual familiarisation with toothbrushing. It is specifically paced to communicate brushing technique, placement of masks and gloves, and ideal behaviour on the chair. Various components are repeated to optimise learning. Do note the pace and length may not be appreciated by the average adults or children. It is recommended to play this video at least 2 times, with 2 days in between, before leading up to the dental check up. This video inculcates oral health prevention, reduces the need for treatment, and improves cooperation and dental experience in line with the recommendations of SG Enabling Masterplan 2019-2021.
